از دیرباز در بسیار ی از کشورها پرورش و نگهداری پرندگانی از قبیل قرقاول، بوقلمون و کبک، علاوه بر پرورش مرغ جهت تامین گوشت مصرفی انسان به ویژه جهت سلیقه های خاص متداول بوده است. در پاره ای از کشورها نیز پرورش متراکم تعدادی از پرندگان وحشی نظیر کبک متداول شده است. صنعت تولید و تکثیر و پرورش کبک در ایران حدود سه سال است که توسط تعداد انگشت شماری از دوستداران شکار و طبیعت آغاز شده و دوستان پرورش دهنده موفق به تولید و تکثیر کبک ایرانی نیز گشته اند و تجارب خوبی در این زمینه کسب کرده اند. در حال حاضر مزارعی در استان های فارس، کرمان، سمنان، گلستان و اصفهان به این فعالیت مشغول می باشند. گوشت کبک معمولا جزو غذاهای لوکس محسوب می شود و قیمت بالا و مخصوص به خود دارد. این گوشت به لحاظ طعم و مزه به بسیاری از گوشت های سفید همچون مرغ، بوقلمون و شترمرغ ارجحیت دارد.
